"Memory foam" (2015) was specially made for the Liduina theme year in Schiedam. Liduina of Schiedam (1380-1433) was a Dutch mystic who is honored as a saint by the Catholic Church.
Saint Liduina was bedridden for much of her life. She dependent on the care of others. She was washed for example by her family. Liduina was very sick and her body was already decomposing, while she was still alive. Lidwina shed skin, bones, parts of her intestines, which her parents kept in a vase and which gave off a sweet odor.
"Memory foam" symbolizes the dissolution process. The work, made entirely out of soap, reminiscent of bodily fluids; bile, blood, pus. Despite the grim appearance, the work smells nice and clean.
